Welcome to 2017. As we are only a few days into this New Year, I know you must be wondering what will happen during the next 360 days. I would hate for you to worry about the future, after all worry is a sin, so let me ease some of your concern and share with you 10 predictions for the coming year.
1. The outrage over “Fake News” will subside once everyone realizes it now matches up with weather forecasts.
Let’s just admit it, would you bet the ranch on a weather forecast? Probably not, and nowadays you don’t know if the news you hear is true or skewed for some purpose. Back in the day Walter Cronkite was called “the most trusted man in America” as a news anchor, whether it was true or not then, today its more about being first than being right.
2. The inventors of self-driving cars, self-flushing toilets and self-checkouts will collaborate on a “self-reading” Bible.
Why take time out of our busy schedule to read the Word of God when you can have it done for you? Put your friends to shame and read the Bible in a year with no effort. But please, make sure you post on social media that your Bible read itself for you today so you can get the credit for not reading your self-reading Bible. Make sure you use a bunch of emoji’s, nothing says it means a lot like a bunch of hieroglyphics.
3. Alabama will win another National Championship……….……..or not.
Talk about going out on a limb, you can’t help but feel for Nick Saban struggling through another undefeated season. What would the world look like if those of us who claim to be followers of Christ did so with the same commitment that Coach Saban coached? Now that’s just crazy talk, God forbid somebody might call us evangelical. We wouldn’t want that would we?
4. Since we can no longer use the terms “he/she” or “male/female”, we will no longer be allowed to call someone “right-handed” or “left-handed.”
Nothing says hate like calling someone a “Southpaw.” In our advanced society we really no longer write, it’s either an email or text. Who cares which hand you do that with anyway? A right-handed male today can be a left-handed female tomorrow. So let’s stop the hate early and just call each other ambidextrous.
5. Scripture will continue to be misused, misconstrued and misquoted.
Shocking to think this could happen. Isn’t everything you see on Pinsta-chat and Insta-twit true? Would people really ignore something the Bible said because they didn’t like it? Would we really take a scripture out of context to fit our beliefs or needs? But how else can you call the IRS a Prosperity Calvinist? They believe that God predestined they would have all your money.
6. The Earth will continue to heat and cool.
In a related prognostication, winter will turn into spring, then summer, then fall then who knows what will happen. Only man could be so self-righteous to think that a planet spinning in space, tilting and wobbling on its axis, only a mere 93 million miles from the largest nuclear explosion in the universe can only change because of what he does.
7. Famous people will continue to die, just like the rest of us.
Sure, if you only watch and listen to the Main Street Media, our lives and the very revolving of the earth are based on everything the famous people do and think. Tragically, they pass away but no more tragic than any death, even of us common folk. That holds true for our church family this week in the loss of Ron Weingarten. It’s not a question of will it happen, only when and more importantly where you will end up. I don’t know about all the famous people who passed this last year but I know Ron is in the presence of Jesus. At the end of the day or year, it’s where you end up that means everything.
8. Being a true “Follower of Christ” will still be “Un-cool.”
At least it will to most. The world is not going to give up its self-centered, narcissistic joyride without a fight. You can’t follow Christ and be in the majority, it’s one of the laws of physics.
9. Jesus will return in 2017……………………………….or He won’t.
You never know. At some point, God the Father will turn to Jesus and give Him the GO sign. This is what our hope is based on. That day promises to be newsworthy and there won’t be anything fake about it.
10. Despite all the insanity, God will remain in control.
He always has been and will always continue to be. It may be difficult for us to wrap our limited minds around but nothing happens that surprises God.
Here’s to 2017, may your walk with Christ grow stronger and deeper.
Run to the Cross!
